Main stream public schools in Mainland China currently do not have the support for students with special needs and/or disabilities. However, China currently has nearly 2,200 special education schools and the country aims to establish a high-quality special education system by 2025. Currently the Chinese education system is the largest state-run education system in the world. Its quality has improved considerably over the last decades due to continuous reforms and large-scale investments. In mainland China, the Compulsory Education Law stipulates there are nine years of government funded compulsory school attendance, for all students, including students with special needs and/or disabilities.

Currently at SIS we have structures in place for certain levels of special needs in the secondary school. SIS has created the leadership position of Pastoral Care Coordinator to follow up daily with students who have social/emotional needs. There are two full-time one-on-one caregivers for students attending the 7th and 8th grade years. Additionally, we have high school students on independent learning tracks, who will not be receiving a full IB diploma, but they will receive their SIS High School diploma, and certain students who have received credit for individual IB courses earning a partial IB diploma along with the SIS High School diploma, which are both lower-pressure options.
