How does an effective leader create and sustain positive, collaborative, and productive relationships with families and the community for the benefit of students?

As an effective leader, Natalie knows to have regular meetings with groups on campus that includes parents and has an “open door” policy when parents come in to talk to her.  Parent representatives are elected by other parents to the School Site Council and the Leadership Team.  A community representative also sits on the School Site Council.  Meetings are scheduled when parents and community members can attend. Natalie's focus in meeting with groups and parents is to build and sustain collaborative and productive relationships for the benefit of students, as seen in agendas, meeting minutes, and videos of the meetings.

  1. Open and Transparent Communication: Establish open lines of communication with families and the community. Regularly communicate school updates, events, and student progress. Provide multiple channels for communication, such as newsletters, emails, social media platforms, and in-person meetings. Be transparent about school policies, decisions, and academic expectations.

  2. Welcoming and Inclusive Environment: Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where families and community members feel valued and respected. Create opportunities for engagement and involvement, and ensure that diverse perspectives and backgrounds are recognized and appreciated. Celebrate cultural diversity and promote cultural competency within the school community.

  3. Two-Way Feedback and Input: Seek feedback and input from families and the community. Conduct surveys, focus groups, and meetings to gather perspectives, suggestions, and concerns. Actively listen and respond to feedback, and demonstrate a willingness to make improvements based on the input received.

  4. Family and Community Events: Organize family and community events to foster connections and build relationships. These events can include back-to-school nights, parent-teacher conferences, open houses, multicultural fairs, and community service projects. Such events create opportunities for positive interactions and collaboration.

How does an effective leader engage in regular and open two-way communication with families and the community about the school, students, needs, problems, and accomplishments?

Natalie knows that an effective leader speaks at parent association meetings and general meetings to report the accomplishments of the school.  A steering committee equally composed of parents and school staff is established to problem solve about the needs and problems of the school and students. Agendas, minutes of committee meetings of the meetings serve as evidence of what is being accomplished.

  1. Parent-Teacher Conferences: Conduct parent-teacher conferences at least once or twice per year. These conferences provide an opportunity for face-to-face discussions about student progress, strengths, areas for improvement, and individualized support strategies. Encourage open dialogue and active participation from both parents and teachers.

  2. Open Door Policy: Maintain an open-door policy where parents and community members feel welcome to reach out, ask questions, and provide feedback. Make yourself accessible and approachable. Respond promptly to inquiries, concerns, and suggestions. Actively listen to their perspectives and demonstrate a willingness to address their needs.

  3. Surveys and Feedback Forms: Use surveys and feedback forms to gather input from families and community members. Seek their opinions on important matters such as school policies, programs, facilities, and community needs. Analyze the feedback received and communicate the actions taken based on the input.

  4. Community Advisory Committees: Establish community advisory committees comprising parents, community leaders, and representatives from local organizations. These committees can provide valuable insights and recommendations on school-related matters.

How does an effective leader develop and provide the school as a resource for families and the community?

Natalie encourages, attends and facilitates such programs as Family Nights, Band and Chorus Concerts, sporting events, fund-raisers and other events that parents and community members attend.  Natalie insures that procedures are followed so that the school can be used by community groups.

  1. Identify Community Needs: Conduct a needs assessment to identify the specific needs and interests of families and the community. This can be done through surveys, focus groups, or meetings with community members. Understand the challenges, aspirations, and expectations of the community to inform resource development.

  2. Community Service Projects: Initiate community service projects that involve students, families, and community members working together to address local needs. For example, organize food drives, neighborhood clean-ups, or fundraising campaigns for community organizations. These projects foster a sense of civic responsibility and strengthen community bonds.

Does the candidate understand, value, and employ the community’s cultural, social, intellectual, and political resources to promote student learning and school improvement?

Natalie organizes field trips, events, and age appropriate instructional practices to promote student learning  and school improvement by valuing and employing the community’s cultural, social, intellectual and political resources. This is evidenced by Natalie:

  1. Organizing sporting travel: As the HS varsity volleyball coach, Natalie organized travel for 22 high school boys,  girls, and 4 coaches to travel to Nanjing, China for the ACAMIS competition.

  2. Organizing Week without walls: As the Head of grade 11, Natalie organized the travel and activities for 50 students, and 6 teacher chaperones in a safe, age appropriate trip to Vietnam.
