How do effective leaders develop an educational mission for the school to promote the academic success and well-being of each student?
At SIS, Natalie collaborates with the school leadership team, faculty, support staff, parents, and community members to inclusively develop a professional learning community.
-
This is evidenced by setting the school mission, philosophy, and beliefs as the driving force for professional development, staff meetings, science department meetings, grade level meetings, and student support meetings to plan and facilitate academic success. Natalie’s leadership style is supportive as a coordinator and leads by example to engage colleagues who are also inspired to bring out the best in their students. The leadership style that Natalie identifies most with is Brian Tracy’s “transformational leadership” because effective leaders should have the ability to motivate others by being motivated themselves. This ensures positive collaboration among the school’s teaching community and fosters a sense of ownership and commitment.
Natalie believes the SIS mission statement reflects the values of student development, well-being, and learning goals.
-
This is evidenced by the acceptance of the IBO learner profile. Natalie has aspirations to be a leader in the International Baccalaureate organization within the Diploma Programme or the Middle Years Programme. Currently, Natalie is the Creativity, Activity, & Service (CAS) coordinator. The CAS coordinator often must seek out new challenges and commit to making a meaningful impact through participation in experiences that require time outside of the school’s regular contracted hours. Natalie has effectively managed her time and resources to ensure the successful completion of CAS projects, while also encouraging coworkers to become more actively involved. Natalie’s leadership in CAS has allowed her to develop valuable skills such as project management, teamwork, and problem-solving.
-
CAS directly influences student development and well-being by creating outlets for students to share their experiences of being creative, active, and service to the community. This is directly reflected in the Mission statement “Shekou International School provides a rigorous education in a caring community and inspires our students to become principled, innovative contributors in a transforming world.”

How do effective leaders strategically develop, implement, and evaluate actions to achieve the vision for the school?
At SIS, Natalie demonstrates effective leadership by proactively designing and implementing strategies to prioritize school improvement based on the school's mission and beliefs. She consistently evaluates these actions to ensure they align with the school's overall philosophy, mission, and beliefs.
-
One example of Natalie's leadership is her facilitation of discussions on school improvement priorities. She has designed a comprehensive CAS handbook that explicitly states the SIS mission and compares it to the IBO mission statement. This handbook undergoes regular review by the senior leadership team, and Natalie actively seeks collaborative CAS professional development training to enhance its effectiveness.
-
In her prioritized action plan, Natalie has successfully incorporated the creation of a two-year CAS program at SIS. She has taken proactive steps to implement and identify actions, including allocating resources, delegating responsibilities, and communicating clear expectations. Natalie's continuous support and guidance ensure that these actions are executed effectively and in alignment with the Mission, Philosophy, and Beliefs of SIS.
-
Natalie also demonstrates her commitment to monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the SIS mission. She collects and analyzes data by actively seeking feedback from students and colleagues regarding the communication and impact of the CAS program. By utilizing this feedback, Natalie continuously refines and improves the program to better serve the school community.
-
Through her proactive leadership and commitment to evaluation, Natalie fosters a positive and impactful school environment that reflects the values and beliefs of SIS. Her efforts contribute to the ongoing success and growth of the CAS program and overall school mission.
How do effective leaders review the school’s mission and vision and adjust them to changing expectations and opportunities for the school, and changing needs and situations of students?
Natalie reviews and amends the school’s mission and vision with all stakeholders at least annually to meet the changing expectations and opportunities for the school and the changing needs of the students.
-
At SIS, Natalie actively engages in the annual review and amendment of the school's mission and philosophy, involving all stakeholders. This collaborative process ensures that the mission and philosophy align with the changing expectations and opportunities for the school and the evolving needs of the students.
-
Natalie firmly believes that effective leaders regularly assess the school's mission and philosophy to ensure their continued relevance with the learner profile of the student community. This commitment to evaluation and adjustment is driven by a deep understanding of the importance of aligning the school's core principles with the characteristics and aspirations of the students.
-
Natalie actively collaborates with a diverse professional learning community consisting of teachers from different grade levels, subjects, and specialties. Through facilitated discussions, they explore and define the evolving identity of the student community. This inclusive approach promotes ownership and cultivates a shared commitment to the well-defined mission and philosophy of SIS.
-
As an education leader, Natalie plays a crucial role in aligning the SIS mission and philosophy with the ten IBO Learner Profile attributes. By actively participating in the annual reviews of the SIS mission and philosophy, Natalie contributes to ensuring that SIS remains responsive and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of the student community. This dedication guarantees the provision of the best possible learning environment for all students at SIS.
